Fellow Landscapers Blog: Drainage

Hello Fellow Landscapers!

Drainage is the foundation on which we begin and build all of our landscaping projects. There are some simple ways to make sure that you have proper drainage. We first look to see that the grade, or slope, of the soil is away from the house. Most of the time we see pockets or voids in the soil right around the foundation of the home. This is caused by water coming in and settling in that area. Remember, water follows the path of least resistance.

Usually the water is coming in from the gutters. We like to build an underground drainage system by attaching 4 inch ADS pipe to the gutter and running it away from the house until we find the proper slope. This is then attached to a 9 inch square drain box. This is one of the most common solutions that we find in our landscapes.

Another solution is to add soil around the foundation to insure that it is sloping away properly. Pro Tip: When you find pockets of settled soil around your landscape do not fill with rock. This does not solve the problem, it only hides it. You need to use topsoil that is packed in.
